TECH REVIEW: ASUS Zenfone 5Z

ASUS Zenfone 5Z Jexx Hinggo
Not so long time ago, I was introduced to ASUS Zenfone by a colleague and got lucky to win a Zenfone 2 Laser. I had fun using it and I thought it was the best Android phone in the market at that time. Since then, ASUS did not stop producing top quality smartphones. They even released versions like the Max, Live, Lite, and Pro. Then February last year, they released the new Zenfone 5 series. And probably the best of the batch is the Zenfone 5Z.

Let's dive into it and read my full review.

DESIGN

This device looks like the Zenfone 5. The front and back are equipped with Corning Gorilla Glass 2.5D contoured for protection which can save the device from minor wear and tear. The glass back looks stunning especially when the light hits it. It really looks premium and I love how thin it is. I like the grip even though it's slippery sometimes.

All of the buttons are on the right side like the volume rocker and power/lock key. On the left, there's a microphone and a SIM slot which can house 2 sims and 1 MicroSD. At the bottom, we can see the 3.5mm audio port, USB Type C port for charging, microphone, and the speaker grille. On top, we have a third microphone and the antennas.

You can see slightly protruded dual cameras at the back along with the flash and fingerprint scanner. I am not a fan of fingerprint scanners placed at the back of the phone. Maybe I'm a bit nitpicky about it but so far, the Zenfone 5Z fingerprint scanner is fast.

Speaking of fingerprints, this phone is a fingerprint magnet. So I suggest you use a phone case. It is available in 2 colors: Meteor Silver and Midnight Blue.

DISPLAY

It has 6.2 inches display and a 1080 x 2246 resolution. With blue light filter and auto color temperature. There's a notch that holds the camera and secondary speaker. It's not bezel-less because there's still a chin at the bottom.

You can choose to hide the notch in the settings but it kind of looks weird to me. It doesn't even cover the videos if you're watching in a default view unless you zoom it. The viewing angles are good and the images are vibrant even under broad daylight.

AUDIO

As I've mentioned, the Zenfone 5Z has dual speakers. It's decent and loud. I have no problems with it.

OS, UI

The Zenfone 5Z runs on Android 8 Oreo with ZenUI 5. I like its 6GB of RAM and 128 internal storage that can expand up to 2TB via microSD. Perfect to store your favorite movies or series.

PERFORMANCE

It's equipped with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor and I can say that it's really fast. Even if I play graphic-intensive mobile games, it's very responsive and quick.

It has face unlock feature too and it's really fast.

BATTERY

It has a non-removable 3300mAh battery and it took me an hour and a half to fully charge it. So it is capable of fast charging.

CAMERA

The Zenfone 5Z camera did not disappoint. I loved it from the first time I used it. I've been bragging it on my social media accounts and even my friends were impressed and have been asking about the phone especially the Night HDR mode shots.

It has 12MP primary and 8MP wide-angle rear cameras with F1.8 aperture and Optical Image Stabilization. It has 16 types of AI Scene Detection and PixelMaster camera modes such as Beauty, Pro, Super Resolution, Panorama, and Time Lapse.

For the front camera, it has 8MP with F2.0 aperture. You can record 1080p videos up to 4K resolution using the rear camera. You can also use the ZeniMoji.

Take a look at these samples.

PRICE

Since it's launch in February 2018, it is still worth P29,995.

FINAL THOUGHTS
  • I really love the design of the Zenfone 5Z. It looks and feels premium among other ASUS Zenfones. This could be Zenfone's best design yet.
  • I love how slim it is and I like the grip. The fingerprint scanner and face unlock feature are fast.
  • I've used it for 4 weeks now and since then, I did not experience any lags or delays.
  • It's capable of fast charging.
  • AI Scene Detection is consistent and quick.
The only downside I see now is the price. As a Zenfone fan, we wish to make this premium smartphone more affordable.

You can visit any ASUS Store or Zenfone kiosks near you to purchase the Zenfone 5Z. You can also check Lazada or Shopee.
